How to Build a Website for Your Business in India: A 7-Step Roadmap

2026-08-1110 min read

A website that looks good and a website that brings in enquiries are two different outcomes, and the difference usually comes down to process rather than design taste. This is the same seven-step approach we follow with businesses across India, from Kota to metro cities.

1. Decide the one primary action

Before picking colours or a logo, decide what you want a visitor to do: fill a form, call, book a demo, or buy. Having one clear primary action means the whole page can guide visitors toward it, instead of offering ten equally weighted options that confuse people.

2. Structure pages around what people search, not your org chart

Customers rarely search for "Our Solutions" — they search for things like "website development company in India" or "custom software for retail business". Every distinct search intent deserves its own page with its own heading and content.

  • One page = one clear search intent
  • Separate pages for each core service, not one long combined page
  • A blog for the questions customers ask before they decide to buy

3. Write the content before locking the design

Design built around real copy tends to look better and convert better than design built around placeholder text. The very first screen needs a clear offer: what you do, who it's for, and what to do next.

Replace vague claims with specifics wherever you can: number of projects delivered, response time, and real client names where possible.

4. Get the technical basics right early

These are cheap to set up during development and expensive to fix later.

  • Fast-loading pages so visitors and Google don't wait around
  • A unique title and meta description for every page
  • One clear heading (H1) per page with a logical structure below it
  • Optimised images so pages load quickly on mobile data
  • A submitted sitemap.xml and robots.txt in Google Search Console

5. Make getting in touch effortless

A form asking for just name and phone number converts better than one asking for eight fields. Place a phone number and WhatsApp link next to it, since many buyers in India prefer to call or message directly rather than fill a form.

6. Set up measurement from day one

Without basic analytics, you can't tell whether the website is actually working for you. At minimum, set up Google Analytics, Search Console, and tracking for form submissions so every enquiry is visible.

7. The first few weeks after launch

Launch is the beginning, not the end. In the first weeks, check which search queries are bringing visitors and improve the pages that are already showing up but not yet on page one — that's usually the fastest way to grow traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a website myself without hiring a company?

DIY website builders can work for a simple brochure site. Once you need integrations, custom design, multiple languages or serious SEO, working with a development company usually saves time and avoids rework.

How many pages does a new business website need?

A good starting point is a home page, one page per core service, an about page, a portfolio or case studies page, and a contact page — typically 6–10 pages in total.

How soon will my new website show up on Google?

Indexing usually takes a few days to two weeks after submitting your sitemap. Ranking well for competitive search terms typically takes a few months of consistent effort.

Should I prioritise mobile design?

Yes — a large share of Indian internet users browse primarily on mobile, so a site that works smoothly on smaller screens is essential, not optional.
